Grand Theft Auto, initially released in 1997 by DMA Design (later Rockstar North), was a top-down perspective action-adventure game that established the formula for the hugely successful franchise. Gameplay revolved around completing missions, stealing cars, and navigating a criminal underworld. It was known for its open-world environment and, at the time, surprisingly mature themes that challenged established game conventions. Although its graphics were simple by today's standards, the game's innovative design laid the groundwork for future open-world games.
