Sonic Labyrinth is an action-adventure game released for the Sega Game Gear in 1995. Unlike other Sonic games of the time, it features a top-down perspective, challenging players with a maze-like structure.  It maintains the spirit of the series by requiring the player to collect rings and defeat enemies.  The game mechanics and level design are quite unique within the Sonic franchise.
